Do you know who your blog's audience is?
Knowing about the people who read your blog, is an important part of being a successful blogger. If you know the kind of people that are reading your articles - you will better know how to write them.
Let me explain:
The topic of your blog alone, can be a good indicator of who your audience is. Take this blog for example - i-Blogger is about the journey to become a successful full-time blogger.
I basically blog about things like, reasons to start a blog, how to choose a blog topic, email lists, auto-responders, tips for writing posts, affiliate marketing, etc.
Going off of that information, what kind of people do you think are reading i-Blogger?
If I had to guess, I would say the ones who are reading the articles on this blog are probably other bloggers or people who are thinking about starting a blog.
However, I think you should be even more specific when it comes to finding out about your blog's readers. You might want to find out if it is mainly men or women who read your blog, if they are younger or older, maybe where they live in the world.
These things can all be very helpful to you as a blogger. They can tell you things like...
- What kind of terminology to use - If I am writing a post about building a blog, and my readers are likely people who have never had a blog before, I should be careful when using certain terms that they might not understand. So If I am talking about SEO techniques, I am going to explain a little bit more about what SEO is, rather than assuming that they already know.
- Should you use abbreviations or slang - If your readers are high-school kids, they are more likely going to understand all of the different slang that people use on the web. But if you are blogging about rebuilding the engine on a classic automobile, your readers probably won't be up-to-date on the latest terms.
- What kind of references to make - Depending on who your readers are, you want to make sure that they will understand the references you are making.
- What NOT to say - This is important especially when you are giving important advice. My other main blog is about the HCG Diet. So I want to make sure that I give tips that are specific and accurate. I can't just tell them things that I think are correct, I have to know that they are. Otherwise they won't be my readers for very long and it will ruin my credibility.
- Which blog posts to write - This is partly to do with your blog topic, but it also depends on your audience. If 80% of your blog readers are from the UK, they are not going to care too much about the weather conditions in the United States.
So as you can see, there are a lot of important reasons that you would want to know who your audience is. Here's how you can get that information.
How to get details about your blog readers:
One way that I get information about my readers is through Alexa. They give me all of the information that I need to know about my blog and it's visitors. To start getting details about your audience
All you have to do is...
- Go to Alexa.com and register for an account
- Verify your account
- Add your blog by clicking on "Add Site"
- Choose to either upload a text file to your blog's root directory or add a meta tag to your home page.
- Then verify it when you're done
Then within 2 business days you should see updated statistics about your blog. You will be able to see...
- Your search traffic
- What keywords your visitors are using to find you with
- Your audience
- Income
- Ethnicity
- Age
- Education
- Gender
- If they have children
The details that Alexa gives you, can be very beneficial in building yourself up as an authority on your blog's topic. Not to mention that it's free to use. So make sure that you take advantage of it and use it wisely.
What do you think is the best detail to know about your audience?

Hey Brian,
I have been using Alexa for quite some time now and I love all of the information they give me. I think your article is dead right! It is very important to know who is reading your work or visiting your site.
But to answer your question -
"What do you think is the best detail to know about your audience?"
I think the best detail to know about my audience is their age and location. That way I can know for the most part what to give them.
Great post -
of course, the age group, the gender and the location matter the most. very informative!

@ Torrent Download - You are very welcome.
I could not agree more with this post!
For instance, I was running a blog on how to meet women at bars and clubs and I was pretty low on sales. One day, I decided I could use some slang in my posts, since it's all men in their 20's and 30's.
I went straight for the F-word and believe it or not, my sales went up dramatically as soon as I did that.
Cheers,
Chris

Great post, yes I agree the info Alexa gives you is invaluable. Thanks
That is really a terrific suggestion RE: Alexa useage. I hadn't really done much in the way with my Alexa account.
I love this idea, because knowing who my audience is allows me to target my content more. Creating content that delivers value and is relevant to readers interests is the number 1 way of generating more traffic and sharing your ideas. Visit http://smartertosmartest.blogspot.com/ to see examples.
