A Search Engine Optimization company can be a valuable asset to your blog. Their specialty is knowing how to raise your search engine ranking and they can even monitor it for you. Doing this yourself can be a lot of work!
However, these days there are a lot of "wannabe" SEO companies on the web. People that are just out to make a buck and really don't know any more than you do about optimizing a blog for the search engines. Knowing what to look for will help you to choose an effective search engine optimization company.
A word of caution:
When looking at different companies, find out what SEO Tactics they use. Steer clear of companies that use cloaked, doorway, or bridge pages to get you higher rankings. These techniques violate mostly all of the different search engines policies and can get your blog penalized or even De-indexed.
What is a Cloaked Page:
It is a page that is invisible to your blog's visitors, but can still be crawled by Search Engine Spiders. The cloaked page will then direct the spiders to a different page that is set up only to boost your search engine rankings.
What is a Doorway or Bridge Page:
A Doorway or Bridge Page will basically use the same concept as a Cloaked Page, but will often be hosted on an entirely different server.

- Find out which search engines they will be able to get you the most positive results with. If Google is not one of them, choose another company. Google is no doubt the main search engine you want to rank well in, but it is not the only one. There is also Yahoo, Bing, and even smaller ones like AlltheWeb.
- Make sure that they will be able to help you rank high for popular keywords. If the keywords that you end up ranking well for don't bring in much traffic, then it's not worth paying them money to help you.
- They should also be able to tell you some of the other blogs or websites that they have worked with in the past. Then go and see how well those blogs rank in the search engines for popular keywords. You could even go and Google a few popular keyword phrases for that certain niche, to see if that blog pops up.
- Find out if the SEO company will monitor and make adjustments if needed. You want to make sure that if what they do for you doesn't get you higher rankings, they will make adjustments to improve your current position in the search engines.
- Of coarse you also want to make sure that you can afford the company and their services. Remember there are a lot of high priced Search Engine Optimization companies on the web, but you can usually always find one that will do a good job for less than what the big guys charge.
