For some, social media is too much of a distraction. I have heard bloggers talk about the different ways that they get distracted by Twitter, Facebook and all the others. I know just what they are talking about too. It is so easy to get caught up in your tweets, that you don’t realize how long you have been on there for.
This is why I try to give myself a schedule that I very much try and stick with. However, my biggest distraction as a blogger isn’t Facebook or even Twitter, it’s blogging. I know, you probably think that was a typing error, so I‘ll say it again, my biggest distraction as a blogger is… Blogging!
Now I know how stupid this must sound, so let me explain.
How Does A Blogger Get Distracted By Blogging?
Well first of all, I have been blogging for about 2 years now, and as I have said before – I enjoy it! I have 2 main blogs that I post to daily. One of those blogs is the HCG Diet 411 Blog, which I had launched October 2009. It’s a blog about the highly controversial HCG Diet, which by the way, works great.
But as many of you know, running a blog can keep you pretty busy. So naturally, I started another blog just a few months later – i-Blogger. Which of coarse, is about the journey to become a successful full-time blogger.
Needless to say, I write a lot of blog posts. This is where I get distracted. You see when I am writing a post for one of my blogs, I will type a certain word or phrase that will spark an idea for another post. Now in the past, I have just simply tried to remember the idea and blog about it later - that never works out. So not wanting to lose my great ideas, I started to quickly write them down in a notepad.
Good idea, right? Not for me…
The problem was, as soon as I wrote down my idea for the post, I would think of a catchy title, so I would write it down. Then, I would think of something funny to say and I would write that down. Before I knew it, I was writing a whole other blog post in my notepad.
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’ mind re-writing my posts, it’s just that while I was writing down that post idea and title, another one would pop into my head; and you know I couldn’t let that one slip away. It became very unorganized.
So I decided to use a program on my computer to write down all of these different ideas. But then what happens is, I end up with a bunch of half written blog posts. I don’t know if I have adult ADD or what.
Although, I am glad to have all of these ideas coming to me. I know there are some bloggers out there, that struggle to come up with one new post idea per week. So, I thought to myself… Brian (I say my own name when I think to myself) How are we going to get this under control?
This is what I've decided to do…
- I will go back to using the notepad, but this time I will be a little more organized. I am going to use a smaller size notepad, about the size of a day-planner. (My son gave me one called the “Dad Pad”)
- I will allow myself to use only 2 to 3 lines for the post idea and title.
- The front half of the notepad will be used for this blog and back half will be for the HCG Diet 411 Blog.
