Since I first got started blogging about 2 years ago, I have been asked a few times to talk with small groups about how to get a blog up and running. People have even wanted me to teach them personally the things that I have done to help them get started with their blogs.
Don't get me wrong, I am always more than happy to share any information or tips that I have learned over the past couple of years.
But the one thing that I know I can't teach someone, is how to have passion for what they are blogging about. I believe that this is the one key element that makes a person become a successful full-time blogger.
If you have a strong interest in whatever topic or niche that you blog about, you're not going to care about how much money you are making at the time. And believe me, for the first little while it is next to nothing, literally!
I had to look at it kind of like an apprenticeship. Usually people will start being an apprentice if they are truly interested in pursuing a certain career, not if they are just thinking about it.
How is blogging like an apprenticeship?
Blogging is like an apprenticeship, in a sense that for the entire time you are there, it's basically so that you can learn the trade. Most of the apprenticeship programs that I know about, you don't get paid to do it, what you learn is your paycheck.
So if you think you're going to start a blog and be able to make enough money to quit your day job a week later, you're going to be very disappointed. It just doesn't work that way.
But if you have passion for something that you are interested in blogging about, that's a good start. Passion can't be taught, you either have it or you don't!
Why did you first start blogging?
