Anybody who reads i-Blogger on a regular basis knows that I have about 7 websites and 2 main blogs. Like most people who want their blogs/websites to be successful, I use Analytics to monitor and test how they are performing.
Even though there are many different analytic tools out there, Clicky, Enquisite, Crazy Egg, I've always preferred to use Google Analytics. They have a lot of helpful tools to help you run a better blog. Not to mention, it's free to use.
One of my favorite features of Google Analytics is... "Traffic Sources", this shows you all of the different details about your blogs traffic from day to day.
Features of Google Analytics Traffic Sources
- Overview: Your traffic totals combined.
- Direct Traffic: Visitors that came directly to your blog.
- Referring Sites: Other sites that visitors found your blog through.
- Search Engines: Which search engines your visitors used to find your blog.
- All Traffic Sources: All of the traffic sources combined.
- Adwords: This is if you use Google Adwords to promote your blog.
- Keywords: Which keywords your visitors typed in to find your blog.
- Campaigns: The feed that visitors viewed your blog through. (if you have more than one feed for a certain blog)
- Ad Versions: The reader your visitors came through. example: Feedburner
All of these features are helpful, but the one I use the most is "Keywords". It allows me to see the different keyword phrases that my blogs show up for in the search engines.
Here is a screen shot of my HCG Diet 411 Blog analytics.
As you can see here circled in red on the bottom right hand side of the picture, there is a total of 511 keywords that my blog has shown up for within the past 30 days. However, it will only show a maximum of 500 different keyword phrases on 1 page.
On the left highlighted in yellow, are the exact keyword phrases. Google Analytics shows the keywords that brought my blog the most visits up at the top of the page. So the most popular keywords are at the top and the least popular are down at the bottom.
What I like to do is look at the middle of the page and see which keywords I could get more visits from. So if there is a popular keyword phrase that I am ranking for, but not getting a lot of visits from, I will write a blog post using those keywords in my article and that will usually start bringing in more visits from that particular phrase.
You can also set goals too. So after I post the article with a certain keyword phrase in it, I can then go back and set a goal to see if I get more visits from that phrase.
On the other hand, if I don't have any blog posts that are related to a keyword that I am getting visits for, that tells me that I could probably benefit from writing a post for that certain keyword phrase, since I already rank for it anyway.
And that is how Google Analytics can tell you what to blog about.
